New critic suggestions

Could you potentially look into adding:

HotNewHipHop and RapReviews.com as they are active, fair, and give regular updates for album reviews. RR also uses a 10-point scale and takes the average of their ratings for lyricism and musicality as their final score.

I also believe Euphoria Magazine does reviews for smaller indie artists.

OurCulture Magazine is also a good one!

I suggest the site No Transmission. They often review lesser known independent albums, and there are a lot of album on this site with no critic scores that they’ve reviewed.

notransmission.com

I’d like to throw in another suggestion – Retro Pop magazine. They typically publish reviews for Adult Contemporary albums. Existed for 2–3 years and now have a print magazine: https://retropopmagazine.com/

Can we add The Source to the critic list? It was the major hip hop publication back in the day. The Source - Wikipedia

I could get behind that.

@Rob sorry to bother you, but please, is there any way to fix the lack of coverage of blues music on the site, sadly big mainstream magazine and outleats doesn’t cover 90% of the genres, and there’s so many albums that get overlooked by that, please can you add sites like ‘bluesrockreview.com’ and ‘rockandbluesmuse.com’ to add some variety, please and i hope in the future latin magazines who reviews latin music are allowed too, so many latin album with zero reviews because the latin reviews are not an option.
hope you can do something about it xx.

Hello, @Rob

Could you please add RapReviews to your publications list? It has been actively reviewing rap albums since 1999, now having over 7,500 reviews in its database. It is also among Metacritic’s approved publications.

Also, I’m not sure if RapReviews has actually been doing this, but their reviews and ratings have been reposted as “user reviews” on your site for the past two years from this account: “RapReviewsRepos.”

Thanks!

Agreed! @Rob I also think the following should be considered as well! All of these sites continue to produce numerically-rated reviews and could take the place of many publications that are now inactive on this website.

  1. The Times Music | The Times & The Sunday Times
  2. The Financial Times Music
  3. Retro Pop https://retropopmagazine.com/category/reviews/
  4. The Fire Note Reviews – The Fire Note
  5. Stereoboard Reviews - Stereoboard
  6. inews Album Reviews - inews.co.uk
  7. NARC Magazine Music | NARC. | Reliably Informed | Music and Creative Arts News for Newcastle and the North East
  8. Mystic Sons Albums | Mystic Sons

@Rob I appreciate all you do for the site.

@Erik_Fickhesen mentioned this source way back in 2020, but I’d really love to see JesusFreakHideout added. Despite their slightly cringy name, they’ve been consistently reviewing Christian and Christian-ish music since 1996. They have a pretty rigorous standard for their ratings, clearly deliniate fan vs. staff ratings, have one featured rating for each album, and it would fill a gap for a lot of albums that were covered in a major niche market.

@Rob Thanks for all your and contributions to this site.

Melody Maker ran for almost 80 years and was a direct rival of NME (before they got merged).

I would also like to echo the support for RapReviews. If any critic were added to this site very few would be more fitting than them. They have a 10-point final score, a large database of ratings (7,500+), and remain highly active today.
