New critic suggestions

Nah, if I could go back in time, I might not have included Sputnik in order to avoid that headache

Along with them removing Staff / Emeritus status from reviewersā€¦

I think what Erik meant was moreso adding their first published review attributed to an album, but I can see how that would be too tedious of a task to keep track of, especially when moderating the site.

Youā€™re the leader of this site, so remove Sputnik if youā€™d like. But you are aware a lot (and I donā€™t use that word loosely here) of albums will have more non-reflective score aggregations because we donā€™t know how to handle dealing with sites where albums get reviewed by more than one critic.

No, Iā€™m fine with Sputnik staying. Iā€™m just quite hesitant on bringing any similar publications into the mix. Which is why I think it was best to avoid All About Jazz.

Iā€™m thinking of starting a separate forum where users come up with a consensus on how to handle a situation like this, and how we would handle what publications to add or not. Iā€™m going for a site that has the most amount of reliable reviews to make sure the most amount of albums we can of all kinds get on the siteā€™s rankings.

Evening Standard would be a good one for both recent and older albums

They give a score out of five and review on weekly basis and are used on ADM https://www.standard.co.uk/go/london/music

Since, The Needle Drop is the only YouTube based critic (to my knowledge) on AOTY, might I suggest another YouTuber, ARTV. He has 137k subscribers, and has a rating scale out of 5. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVOjJR_2CwJpGZ5JJhkeFfQ).

Looks like PopMatters is still rating albums, but they arenā€™t appearing correctly on the review pages?

If you look at the source code thereā€™s a rating in <div class=ā€œcustom-field-article-ratingā€> like this:

So these are safe to add to the site, but itā€™s a little more work to find.

The Digital Fix https://www.thedigitalfix.com/music/category/review/

Theyā€™ve been rating albums since around 2006 I think with a score out of 10. Also used on ADM

Iā€™d suggest Thank Folk For That, who use a 5 star point system

I agree about Christgau. I know most users of AOTY arenā€™t historians, but Christgau is pretty vital to the history of music journalism. His reviews ought to be represented on AOTY.

I recommend Russian publications and Youtube bloggers

  1. Intermedia (publication), use 10-rating scale - https://www.intermedia.ru/rubrics/117
  2. Musical Viking (publications), use 10-rating scale - https://musicviking.ru/
  3. EarzOnFire (YouTube bloger), use 10 rating scale - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkaO7yNoH7t56EyE4DFAbKQ

I hope you take a closer look at them

So many suggestions but I think we should focus more on critics with consistent review, at least one published review per week and they also have their own rating system. It will be nice if some members can suggest some non-English sites to expand our lists. My recommendations

  • Earbuddy (US)
  • The Alternative (US)
  • Punknews (US)
  • The Times/The Sunday Times (UK)
  • Evening Standard (UK)
  • Vulture Hound (UK)
  • Stereoboard.com (UK)
  • The Irish Times (Ireland)
  • XS Noize (Ireland)
  • The Music (Australia)
  • X-Press Magazine (Australia)
  • Musikexpress (Germany)
  • The Vinyl Chapters
  • Thank Folk For That

If we stick with Youtuber critics, ARTV has been reviewing music just as long as TheNeedleDrop. He covers more alternative/emo/pop-punk artists, but should still be considered on this site.

Classic Rockā€™s sister magazine Classic Pop would be a nice addition.

My suggestion would be Alternative Addiction. They are a pretty good website and their popularity has grown a lot recently.
