Your Favorite Albums of 2016

While there are a few more releases coming this year, I thought it’d be a good time to start discussing your favorite albums of the year. Here a couple links to help recall what was released in 2016.

Still a lot I need to (re)listen to before the year ends, but a few of my favourites so far:

  • “My Woman” — Angel Olsen
  • “Skeleton Tree” — Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
  • “The Bride” — Bat For Lashes
  • “A Moon Shaped Pool” — Radiohead

Can’t say I’ve found 2016 too impressive in terms of music overall though; there’s been plenty of albums I liked but in terms of albums I’ve loved the list becomes very narrow (even calling AMSP a favourite feels a bit of a stretch when I’ve only listened to the whole thing a few times).

So far, my favorite album is Whitney’s “Light Upon the Lake.” Just has so much replay value for me. Overall a disappointing year for music.

I have listened to maybe 50 albums from 2016, so I still have a lot of albums to listen to/relisten to before the year ends. I have a habit of deciding my AOTY the following year once all is settled. I am engulfed by Death Grips’ “Bottomless Pit”, I almost despise myself for ranking it so high on my list after I just gave “The Powers The B” a perfect score. How can a group so unpredictable be so consistent?

My 5 favorite albums from this year (in order):

  • Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
  • Angel Olsen - Woman
  • Avalanches - Wildflower
  • Young Thug - Slime Season 3 (Thugger made me a huge fan this year)
  • Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered.

The list will most likely change as 2016 comes to an end. This year has gone by quick huh?

the list i put above is more of my favourite go-to records of the year rather than the absolute best. kinda hard to explain. the glowing man is one of those albums I find myself listening to maybe once or twice a month all the way through for how grandiose it is, but with each listen, it’s one hell of an experience. same reason applies to other yearly standouts for me like mark pritchard and nick cave.

Not necessarily my favorite albums of 2016 but the these are the albums I played the most throughout the year. There’s still a lot of releases I need to check out but will probably procrastinate because there’s just too much music man.

  3. Car Seat Headrest - Teens Of Denial
  4. Touché Amoré - Stage Four
  5. Vektor - Terminal Redux

I’ll also list as Kero Kero Bonito’s Bonito Generation as an extra since I was late to the party and only gave the album a few listens but it’s too cute and fun not to mention here.

this is exactly me
